Martha's Story

"When Martha's condition worsened, her husband Ray spoke with her oncologist, who recommended JSSA's hospice care.  As Martha's hospice nurse, I made regular visits to Martha's home to make sure she was comfortable and her pain was controlled.  Our social worker and chaplain provided support and counseling for Martha, Ray, and their family, while our home health aide helped with Martha's personal care and meals.  Hospice volunteers came weekly and read aloud to Martha, giving Ray some much-needed respite.  Ray called me when Martha died.  It was midnight. I came right over to give Ray emotional support and help as they made final arrangements. Ray and I talked throughout the night as we waited for the funeral home to arrive. We spoke about their life together and how much Ray would miss her. I talked to him about how JSSA's bereavement services were there to help him and his family. My being there made a difference, and for me, that's what matters most."
